NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — The first tunnel boring machine for the Hudson Tunnel project has begun boring the northern tube of the new tunnel, the Gateway Development Commission has announced.
The Commission held an event to mark the start of boring late last month, but additional testing was still required before the actual work could begin [see “Ceremonies mark start …,” Trains.com, Sept. 28, 2026]. A second machine has yet to begin work.
The two machines will bore and build the first 5,100 feet of the tunnel through solid rock from North Bergen to an access shaft on the border of Weekhawken and Hoboken. There, they will be removed and replaced with two machines designed for the variable conditions under the Hudson River…
