Newark OKs $5.89M in Homeless Funding Amid Questions on Shelter Conditions

NEWARK — The City Council approved $5.89 million in federal funding for homeless sheltering services this week amid questions about a shelter provider’s operations.

The council’s distribution of grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to 14 entities came at the same meeting at which officials approved the application of a $5 million grant from the state Department of Community Affairs for the “2024 Homeless Housing and Services Project.”

Council President LaMonica McIver requested a report from the city’s health department regarding organizations receiving grants through the city for sheltering services. McIver asked that shelter operators next month appear before the council to discuss their services.

McIver specifically discussed services provided by the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, which provides sheltering services at the Hotel Riviera, among other locations.

“I’m very interested in Catholic Charities,” McIver said. “Today, I had the opportunity to go over to the Riviera to tour, and the services (are) definitely a high concern.”
