Storm chaser catches spout thanks to a broken air conditioner

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The spectacle from the Tuesday night storm captured the attention of people driving by and storm chasers alike, but thankfully, there was no report of this rotation touching land — just some strong winds.

A viewer sent a picture showing damage to large tarps at structures by commercial piers, appearing to be at a private ship repair company. When we contacted Newport News Shipbuilding, which is separate, they told 10 On Your Side they had no reported storm damage on their property.

As for the rest of the damage, all 10 On Your Side saw while driving around the Peninsula were downed branches, mostly small ones. We lucked out on land, and so did storm chaser Jesse Bass…
