The National Weather Service issued a rare September coastal flood advisory for San Francisco Bay as tides are forecast to be higher than usual Monday through Thursday.
Before this year, the Bay Area weather service office had never issued a coastal flood advisory in September. This week’s advisory marks the second such instance this month, an indication of El Niño’s capacity to raise the seas that will only grow into winter.
Up to 1.2 feet of seawater inundation is possible along low-lying shorelines and tidal waterways that are accustomed to coastal flooding.
