OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A developer is seeking city funding to demolish abandoned buildings near 25th and Center Street and replace them with new apartments and townhomes, including nearly 200 affordable housing units.
The Omaha City Council is considering a $3.6 million tax increment financing request to help fund the nearly $60 million development. A public hearing and vote were originally scheduled for Tuesday but were pushed to July 28 after the developer requested more time to make minor adjustments.
Neighbors cite crime, fires at abandoned site
Residents near the site said the vacant buildings have drawn crime and safety concerns. A homeless man was assaulted near the property, according to neighbor Ken Budka.
“Recently, we had a homeless man assaulted by a younger crowd and think the crime that just comes with this building is kind of poor taste for the neighborhood,” Budka said…
