OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Summer is the busiest time of year for the Nebraska Humane Society, with stray animal intake rising sharply compared to winter months.
In 2025, the Nebraska Humane Society recorded an average of 815 strays during summer months, compared to 540 in the winter — an increase of just over 50%.
‘All hands on deck’
Steven Elonich of the Nebraska Humane Society said the surge puts significant demands on staff and volunteers.
“We have to have all hands on deck in the summer, especially because we do have all those kennels full and all those different needs that vary from food and water to enrichment to medical care to outings to adoptions to more volunteer hours needed,” Elonich said. “All of those play a role.”…
