OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – Overland Park approved changes to Saturday’s World Cup watch party. The Common Consumption Area, also known as CCA, which allows adults to consume alcohol while walking around, will be smaller.
The city says that’s because the watch party falls on a Saturday, the same day as the farmer’s market.
“The way the street closures work is that we would have to have a Public Works crew come in basically Friday night to close the streets down before the farmer’s market, before the World Cup party,” said Meg Ralph, the Communications Director for the City of Overland Park. “We didn’t want to have to shut down access to downtown for that long, so this just shifted the locations of the party.”
This change will allow people to still drive and park along Sante Fe, 79th, and 80th Streets. Ralph says you will still be able to walk between both screens set up at Thompson Park and Clock Tower Landing.
“We already have to do a lot of maneuvering in downtown on farmer’s market mornings and even the night before,” said Ralph. “This just gives us a little bit more space to let people have access to downtown, which is the whole point of it, right? We want people to come down and shop and eat.”…
