Santa Rosa, Escambia counties turn damaged signposts into artificial reef habitats

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. — Damaged metal signposts from Santa Rosa County and Escambia County are getting a second life underwater as part of a new effort to create micro-habitats for marine life.

Through a collaborative “reef-cycling” initiative, the two counties are repurposing damaged metal signposts by incorporating them into concrete artificial reef modules.

Officials say the goal is to turn scrap that might otherwise be discarded into added structure that could provide shelter for small fish and invertebrates…
