Up to 12 Inches of Rain Could Swamp Panama City, Destin and Pensacola by Sunday Night as Repeated Tropical Downpours Raise Fears of Sneaky, Overperforming Flash Flooding

PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA — The Florida Panhandle could be in for a dangerous deluge this weekend. The high-resolution HRRR model shows 6 to 12 inches of rain possible from Panama City to Pensacola between 8 PM Friday, October 2 and 8 PM Sunday, October 4, with Panama City near 9.5 inches and East Pensacola Heights around 8.8 inches. Forecasters warn that repeated rounds of tropical downpours could lead to sneaky, overperforming flash flooding, where rain totals end up higher than expected and water rises faster than people realize.

Panama City Tops the Forecast

Panama City sits near the top of the forecast with about 9.5 inches of rain in just two days. Nearby communities like Panama City Beach, Lynn Haven, Callaway, Mexico Beach and Port St. Joe are also in the heavy rain zone.

Bay County’s low-lying neighborhoods, coastal roads and areas near St. Andrew Bay could see flooding, especially where storm drains struggle to keep up.

Pensacola Area Near 9 Inches

To the west, East Pensacola Heights is forecast for about 8.8 inches, putting the Pensacola metro in serious danger of flooding. Communities like Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Milton and Pace could also see several inches.

Pensacola has a history of severe flash flooding when tropical downpours stall over the area, and forecasters are watching this setup closely.

Destin and Fort Walton Beach in the Middle

Between Pensacola and Panama City, Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville and Santa Rosa Beach sit right in the middle of the heaviest rain band. Popular tourist areas along Scenic Highway 30A could see flooded roads and parking lots…
