Shady Side Academy Going Deep in Hock for $30M Fox Chapel Facelift

Shady Side Academy is taking its century-plus Pittsburgh-area operation into the municipal-bond market, lining up as much as $30 million for campus upgrades while it works to stay competitive for students. The financing would add a new layer of debt to a building strategy already reshaping how the 143-year-old institution houses and markets its students.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the academy plans to borrow $30 million in the municipal bond market for campus improvements. Shady Side was founded in 1883 as an all-boys school established by Pittsburgh steel-industry pioneers, and its own history page now describes a multi-campus, coeducational operation serving students from pre-kindergarten through high school.

A 6–12 Campus Plan Is Driving The Borrowing

The academy’s main 6–12 campus is located at 423 Fox Chapel Road, according to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. The location is becoming the center of Shady Side’s effort to bring middle- and senior-school students into a more unified campus environment.

Shady Side’s official campus plan includes the new Rockwell Middle School, a future Rockwell Student Commons, renovations to Bayard and Croft houses, and a west entrance intended to improve traffic flow and campus access. The plan also frames the consolidation as a way to use learning spaces more efficiently and strengthen the academy’s long-term financial sustainability.

Rockwell Opened Before The Next Big Financing Push

The proposed borrowing follows the January opening of Rockwell Middle School, a nearly 50,000-square-foot facility built for about 240 students.
