Texas Parole Board Grants Amber Guyger Release After Seven Years in Prison for Killing Botham Jean, Drawing Outrage and Disappointment From His Family

DALLAS, TX — Amber Guyger has been granted parole after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence for the 2018 killing of Botham Jean, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles confirmed Thursday.

The decision brought an immediate wave of surprise and anger because Guyger, a former Dallas police officer, was convicted in 2019 of murder in Jean’s apartment. The board did not say when she would be released, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said it does not yet have an official release date.

Guyger had faced a sentence range of five years to life before jurors settled on 10 years. Her parole approval means she will serve the remainder of that sentence under supervision if and when she is released.
