MARTIN COUNTY – A local senior citizen nearly lost $600,000 in a “gold bar scam,” but was able to get his money returned through the efforts of a Martin County Sheriff’s Office deputy.
According to a sheriff’s office Facebook posting, the victim was told by someone claiming to represent the victim’s financial institution that that victim’s bank account was compromised and the safest way to protect his money was to “back it up” with gold.
The victim was instructed to send $600,000 – his life’s savings – to a legitimate gold vendor, where the gold would then be picked up by a third-party driver and supposedly be delivered to the bank, according the Facebook posting…
