This park shows Portland is ‘best city in the world to raise a family,’ councilor says

The doors and windows of The Shack at Sellwood Park flipped open for the second summer in a row Saturday, ready to provide crafts and sports equipment to a jubilant line of waiting children and families.

The Shack offers community-funded recreation programs out of a small building in Sellwood Park. Nonprofit Sellwood Community House reopened The Shack last year after an approximately $90,000 fundraiser. It had been closed for decades.

Now, the center provides free, all-day access to craft and sports supplies, classes and other offerings through local partnerships like BodyVox dance…
