A homeless shelter in Portland is facing scrutiny after accusations that it misused $3.6 million in Multnomah County funds.
Sunstone Way, which operates homeless shelters in both Multnomah and Clackamas Counties, got hit with a financial review that uncovered “shocking” results, shared via a report done by the Department of County Management. Sunstone Way’s finances were reviewed between July 1, 2024, and Feb. 28, 2026. Several issues were found — unbudgeted payroll expenses, non-programmatic spending, and other expenditures deemed inappropriate by a taxpayer-funded homeless service organization.
Those issues highlighted by the county could lead to $3.6 million in damages paid to the county by the provider, which was described by the county as a “high-risk contractor” in 2022…
