Portland’s Narcotics and Organized Crime unit says it pulled a major stash of fentanyl, weapons and cash off the street Friday after arresting a suspected dealer in Northwest Portland.
According to a Portland Police Bureau Facebook post, NOC investigators detained the suspect near NW 28th Avenue and Thurman Street, then searched his vehicle and a motel room. Officers reported finding more than 480 grams of suspected fentanyl, a pistol, a Taser and over $2,300 in cash, according to the Portland Police Bureau. The bureau described the case as an active investigation and said no further details are being released for now.
How big is the haul?
Federal data puts the seizure in stark perspective. The Drug Enforcement Administration says one kilogram of fentanyl can contain up to 500,000 potentially lethal doses, which means roughly 480 grams could translate to about 240,000 such doses, according to the DEA. The agency warns that only a few milligrams can be fatal, depending on tolerance and other factors.
NOC steps up downtown missions
The bust fits into a broader crackdown on street-level dealing in and around downtown. According to Portland Police Bureau annual reports and recent news releases, the NOC unit has been ramping up interdiction missions this year and reporting sizable fentanyl recoveries as it targets open-air markets.
Other recent busts
Friday’s case follows a string of local operations. In March, a coordinated operation near a BottleDrop parking lot led to the arrest of a suspected dealer and the seizure of fentanyl and a firearm, as reported by BottleDrop parking lot. Police leaders and federal partners have repeatedly pointed to enforcement in and around downtown as a priority amid rising synthetic opioid deaths.
Legal stakes if charges follow
The quantity involved could carry serious legal consequences. Because investigators reportedly seized more than 480 grams, the amount exceeds the 400 gram threshold that can trigger a 10 year mandatory minimum under federal drug trafficking statutes, a factor prosecutors will weigh if they pursue federal charges, according to Congress.gov. Whether any charges are filed, and at what level, will depend on how the investigation unfolds…
