TriMet reducing number of private security officers as Transit Police Division bolstered

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Facing a budget shortfall, TriMet has announced that it will be reducing the number of private security officers it contracts.

While budget cuts play a factor in TriMet’s decision to reduce the number of private security officers contracted through Allied Universal, the company says that they had previously anticipated becoming less reliant on private security as more police officers became available for the Transit Police Division.

TriMet says they increased privately-contracted security personnel in 2023, as riders returning to the transit system following the pandemic encountered issues with open drug use, homelessness, and mental health crises…
