‘We’re facing layoffs’: Portland homeless services at risk under budget plan

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Portlanders packed City Hall on Monday, sounding off on a litany of proposed cuts, including the potential loss of certain support services aimed at helping people rebuild their lives, not just survive day to day.

This comes as the city faces a $170 million budget shortfall. Mayor Keith Wilson proposed cuts citywide, now city council will debate dozens of amendments they put forward.

One of the programs on the chopping block is Portland’s Workforce Development Program, which helps people experiencing homelessness find jobs, stable housing and long-term independence. Participants say the program has helped them get back on their feet after addiction and homelessness…
