Showers and storms Sunday night usher in cooler weather for the workweek

It’s a very warm weekend across Southern New England, with high temperatures on Sunday once again reaching the upper 80s to near 90.

Sunday will start off sunny in the morning, with increasing clouds in the afternoon. Those clouds are out ahead of our next cold front, which arrives Sunday night.

As the front approaches the region, it will be accompanied by a broken line of showers and thunderstorms. Those showers and storms likely arrive after 10 p.m. Sunday night, with the bulk of the rain expected to arrive around midnight.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Rhode Island in a level 1 out of 5 “marginal” risk for severe storms, which is the lowest risk category. Given the late-night arrival time of these storms, they are likely to weaken as they cross Southern New England due to diminishing instability (storm fuel in layman’s terms). If a stronger storm holds together, the primary risk will be gusty winds.

Any showers and storms will end by sunrise on Monday morning. Once the front clears the coast, a drier air mass arrives with low humidity. Dewpoints will drop from near 60 on Sunday into the 50s on Monday and even the upper 40s on Tuesday.

The first part of the workweek will be gorgeous with ample sunshine and high temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s from Monday through Wednesday. Another chance for rain showers arrives on Thursday…
