Federal Hill armed robbery suspect killed in NJ shootout

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WPRI) — The man wanted for an armed robbery on Federal Hill last year died in a shootout with U.S. Marshals in New Jersey Wednesday, 12 News has learned.

Shamar Leggette, 41, was shot and killed by officers outside of a South Brunswick hotel, according to authorities. Leggette reportedly opened fire on the officers while walking out of the hotel, according to CBS News .

Providence detectives believe Leggette robbed and shot a man who was sitting in his parked car on Atwells Avenue back in August.

Leggette was also wanted for reportedly robbing a Brooklyn bishop at gunpoint during a livestreamed sermon two years ago, and for a deadly shooting outside of Pennsylvania gentlemen’s club last December. He’s been described as a “career criminal” who was previously convicted of robbing an NBA player outside of a Manhattan restaurant in 2002.

No officers were injured during the shootout, which remains under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office .
