A Southern California Water Agency Tried to Take Over Two Eel River Dams. Federal Regulators Just Said No.

The plan to remove two aging dams on the upper Eel River is back on track.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has denied a Southern California water district’s bid to intervene in Pacific Gas and Electric’s decommissioning case, ruling the request arrived far too late.

The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District, a Riverside County agency serving roughly 150,000 customers, filed to join the proceedings earlier this month, more than eight months past the deadline. FERC staff found no reason to make an exception. “[T]he District failed to demonstrate that good cause exists to grant its untimely motion to intervene because it did not provide any explanation for the untimeliness of its motion,” the denial reads.
