This Quiet SoCal Lake Is a Dream Fishing Escape

I am not a fishing enthusiast, to put it mildly. But that is not to say that I don’t have an appreciation for it. In fact, the thought of fishing brings back warm memories of family camping trips and long, lazy days on the water. It is always fun to share the excitement of a great catch, or a first catch, and I also love the peace and calm associated with fishing. We have quite a few popular angling spots in Southern California, but the beautiful Lake Gregory in Crestline, CA, still tends to go a bit under the radar, despite being one of SoCal’s best fishing destinations. Let’s dive (pun intended) deeper into the Lake Gregory fishing opportunities.

Why Lake Gregory Is a Hidden Gem for Fishing

Lake Gregory is a relatively small man-made lake in the tiny town of Crestline. Nestled in the San Bernardino Forest, it feels remote yet is just about two hours from Los Angeles, making it easily accessible and ideal for a day trip. Larger recreation areas like Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake tend to get a lot more attention and more visitors than this picturesque alpine lake. As a result, you’re in for a much more relaxed and laid-back experience than those other tourist hot spots. Lake Gregory is yet another peaceful fishing lake in Southern California.

What You Can Catch at Lake Gregory

The lake is regularly stocked with fish, particularly golden and rainbow trout, and there have been quite a few impressive catches throughout the year. Bass and catfish are also found in the lake. There is a $10 fee for fishing at the lake (mandated by the county), which helps keep the lake stocked. You can also choose to purchase an annual fishing pass for $89.

What It’s Like To Fish Here

You simply cannot beat the breathtaking scenery at this gorgeous lake surrounded by pine and cedar forests. You will find that there are ample places along the shoreline where you can stake out a private little spot to cast your line and enjoy some peace and quiet while you wait for a bite. It’s considered one of the best places in Southern California to learn to fish.

What To Know Before You Go

You’ll find everything you need – including fishing passes, stock calendar, boat and equipment rentals, and more on the Lake Gregory Company website. Lake Gregory Bait and Tackle is located conveniently on the water’s edge and offers whatever you need for a great day of lake fishing, including snacks and beverages.

Lake Gregory is open year-round for fishing from sunrise to sunset. The best times to fish are considered in the spring and fall. To fish for trout specifically, visiting from November to April is your best opportunity.

More Things To Do Around Lake Gregory

Love having your furry best friend with you? Dogs are welcome on the trails (leashed, of course), and there is a lovely dog park for them to play off-leash.

Of course, fishing is just one good reason to come to Lake Gregory. Between catches, you can enjoy swimming, kayaking, boating, or relaxing in a beach cabana. Or bring the family for a fun summer day at the inflatable water park. There are also beautiful picnic areas and a 2.6-mile hiking trail that goes around the lake…
