Amazon hits brakes on illegal e-bike sales in California

(KRON) — Amazon said it will no longer sell e-bikes in California that exceed state speed limits, according to Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. The decision comes after California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a consumer alert last month.

According to Spitzer, there have been more than 100 deaths across the United States from e-bike and e-motorcycle crashes. Injuries related to e-bikes and e-motos have spiked 430% in Southern California over the past four years.

In Bonta’s consumer alert, the AG laid out guidelines stipulating that pedal-assisted e-bikes cannot exceed 28 miles per hour and that throttle-assisted e-bikes be limited to 20 miles per hour. E-bikes that exceed these speeds would be classified instead as motorcycles or mopeds, requiring additional licensing and age restrictions.
