An extended stretch of wet, stormy weather is taking hold across Southwest and Central Virginia. Forecasters warn the unsettled pattern will persist through most of the coming week.
According to WFXR meteorologist Brandon Lashbrook, temperatures on Sunday, August 2 are being held down into the 70s by rain and cloud cover. Despite the cooler readings, elevated dewpoints are making conditions feel exceptionally muggy outdoors.
Storm Threat and Flood Watches Already Active
Active weather alerts are already in place across a wide swath of the region. Flood watches cover numerous counties including Alleghany, Amherst, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, and Craig, among others. Flood warnings have also been issued for Carroll and Patrick counties.
Lashbrook reports that numerous showers and storms are expected throughout the day on Sunday, with a Marginal Risk — rated 1 out of 5 — outlined for the area by the Storm Prediction Center. Damaging winds are the primary hazard with any stronger storms that develop.
Heavy Rain Possible Through the Weekend
Rain isn’t letting up soon. An upper-level cut-off low is expected to develop and anchor itself over the region, driving daily rain and storm chances into the early part of next week.
