Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Summer started on the cool side, with temperatures running below average. But as we wrap up June and head into July, a noticeable warm-up is on the way, bringing above-average temperatures to much of Western New York.
A strong area of high pressure will build across the Deep South and expand northward through the middle of the week. As it strengthens and stalls, it will allow hotter air to spread across much of the eastern U.S., sending temperatures well above normal.
High temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s this week, with the heat sticking around for several days. While stretches like this aren’t common, they’re certainly not unprecedented for early July. Through the first half of the week, expect plenty of sunshine and dry conditions — perfect weather for a day at the pool or a trip to the beach. As we get closer to the weekend, we will be tracking the chance for a few isolated showers and thunderstorms.
It’s not just the heat we’ll be dealing with this week. We can expect hazy, hot and humid conditions as well. Dew points will climb into the upper 60s and 70s, making it feel much hotter than the actual air temperature. High humidity makes it harder for your body to cool itself through sweating, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration. If you’ll be spending time outdoors, be sure to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the day…
