A portion of Elm Street in downtown Rochester was closed Tuesday evening due to safety concerns over the Hotel Cadillac building, and other surrounding structures.
The Rochester city engineer ordered the closure of the street between Atlas and Chestnut streets after discovering loose material on the exterior of the hotel and the adjacent Richford building, which are both safety hazards, according to a release.
Elm Street is closed to pedestrians and motorists. Additionally, the sidewalk and parking lane on southbound lanes of Chestnut Street, between Euclid and E. Broad streets, is also closed.
The city of Rochester has been working with the property owners in support of redevelopment of the buildings. But with persistent safety concerns, the city is requiring the owners to alleviate the hazards.
The city is asking for the owners to provide a licensed engineer report that states “all hazards have been mitigated,” the release states. The streets and sidewalks are all closed until the city is satisfied with the safety of the structures.
