BELOIT, Wis. (WMTV) – The 12th annual Beloit Kubb Open transformed the former Bullet Snappers’ Stadium into a tournament ground Saturday, drawing 46 teams to compete in both recreational and competitive divisions.
Kubb is a traditional Swedish lawn game in which teams use wooden batons to knock over wooden blocks.
Players at Saturday’s event said the community surrounding the game is a key reason they return each year.
Savannah Schindler, director of communications with Visit Beloit, described the game as a mix of two familiar pastimes.
“Kubb is kind of a combination between Viking chess and bowling — it is kind of a fun strategy game a lot of people play in their backyards,” Schindler said. “It is very popular in the Midwest. It is an awesome day — we love Kubb in Beloit. It is great to see everyone playing together and sharing that camaraderie — it is a great day.”…
