Rockford native, Yale professor wins first game of Jeopardy! tournament

The beat goes on for Rockford native Lloyd Sy after winning another exciting game of Jeopardy! Wednesday to advance to the semifinals in the game show’s Champion Wild Card competition.

The episode aired Wednesday on NBC affiliate 13-WREX.

Before the 30-minute episode was over, Sy had collected $24,399.

The former Auburn High class valedictorian and current Yale English literature professor started off slowly with cash leads of $1,400 and $1,800 cover his two competitors before surging ahead by answering questions in the categories “shake it off,” “Bad Blood” and “Our Song.”

If Sy seemed relaxed and at ease, it was because he was.

“You always want to go into Jeopardy! having some energy,” he said Wednesday after the show aired. “Because if you don’t have energy, you are not going to react very quickly. But I think at that point, I came in and I was like, if this is it, I’m really happy to be done with Jeopardy! Like, we’ve done enough here. So I think the pressure was off.”

The Champions Wildcard competition features contestants who won at least one or two games.
