Rockford area man featured in national Super Bowl commercial with 49ers star

Christian McCaffrey is not playing in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

At least not the Christian McCaffrey from Belvidere.

But you may see him on your television screen.

McCaffrey is featured in a national Super Bowl LVIII commercial because he shares a name with the San Francisco 49ers running back who will be playing Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I had the name first,” said Belvidere’s McCaffrey, who, at 29 is two years older than the football player. “That’s been my running joke for years.”

McCaffrey was chosen to co-star in the 45-second Xfinity spot from a field of five people from across the U.S. who also share the player’s name. The other star? San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey, of course.

“They went to his house right after (the 49ers) won the NFC Championship to film his part of the commercial,” McCaffrey said. “I actually filmed my part before the championship.”

The commercial showcases the Belvidere McCaffrey’s football prowess, or lack thereof, while the All-Pro McCaffery interjects comments like, “That’s not good,” and, “That’s going to leave a mark.”
