State program gives millions to local governments for new paratransit vehicles

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that more than 500 paratransit vehicles are being awarded to 113 providers across the state.

Nearly 400 buses will replace ones that are aging or no longer in service. More than 100 will be used to expand existing services.

“Transit is an essential service that allows our urban, suburban and rural communities to survive and thrive, providing transportation to people who might not have any other option,” said Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “More than ever, IDOT under Gov. Pritzker is getting communities the resources they need. These vehicles are going to benefit people immediately and far into the future.”

The vehicles are being valued at $57.1 million. These vehicles are going to nonprofit organizations that serve seniors and individuals with disabilities.

One vehicle is coming to Boone County, three are coming to Freeport and five are going to RMTD. They are set to be delivered in the next two years.
