Memorial Day morning in Sacramento is starting off clear and cool, but the calm will not last. By this afternoon, the region is expected to turn warm and breezy as temperatures climb from the low 50s into the upper 70s, with a high near 79°F. As south-southwest winds pick up and relative humidity slips into the teens and low 20s in parts of the Valley, fire-weather concerns will tick up right alongside those backyard barbecues.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
According to NWS Sacramento, south-southwest winds of 6-14 mph are expected Monday, with gusts that could reach the mid 20s. Stronger gusts are possible in the Sierra and northern Valley. The windiest stretch is expected from early afternoon through early evening, a setup that can rattle lightweight canopies and turn flimsy patio umbrellas into projectiles.
If you are grilling, picnicking, or setting up shade in the yard or at a park, this is the time to secure umbrellas, tie down tarps, and stash anything that might take off in a gust. A little prep can save you from chasing lawn chairs down the block.
Fire Rules And Permits
Low humidity combined with gusty winds means open flames carry a higher wildfire risk. CAL FIRE currently lists Sacramento County as “Permit Required” for residential burning, effective May 1. Officials are urging residents to hold off on debris burns and to keep charcoal grills well away from dry grass, brush, and anything that can ignite.
If a fire slips out of its container or pit, call 911 immediately and follow instructions from local fire agencies. Fast reporting can keep a small flare-up from turning into a bigger problem.

The weather pattern will shift Tuesday into Wednesday as winds turn northerly. Highs dip into the mid 70s on Tuesday, then a gusty north wind is expected on Wednesday, with some of the strongest midweek gusts possible along and west of Interstate 5. By the weekend, temperatures trend warmer, with mid 80s expected Saturday and upper 80s possible by Sunday…
