Six blocks of Sacramento’s R Street Corridor will transform into an open-air food hall this Saturday, September 5, as Our Street Night Market returns with more than 100 local food vendors, chefs and restaurateurs packed between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. The free and $5 tickets are already gone, leaving only $15 tickets for anyone hoping to walk the market at 1108 R Street.
According to the Sacramento Bee, the market is designed to give mom-and-pop food operations a broader audience while pushing Sacramento’s food culture forward, drawing inspiration from the open-air markets of Asia. That mission traces back to 2018, when Sacramento marketing agency Yellow Brick Group co-owners Shawn Kahan and Curtis Currier launched the event while living at the Warehouse Artist Lofts on R Street, according to Comstock’s Magazine.
What began as a two-block gathering that drew roughly 10,000 people in its first year had grown into an eight-block, 25,000-person event by September 2022, per the same Comstock’s account. This year’s footprint is six blocks, per the Bee’s report, still a sprawling closure for a corridor that doubles as a residential and commercial strip.
From Food Truck Debut to Brick-and-Mortar Success
The night market has functioned as something of an incubator for Sacramento’s culinary scene.
