Longtime journalist killed in freak accident after tires fall off tractor-trailer

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV/Gray News) – A 73-year-old St. Louis journalist was killed when investigators say two tires came off a tractor-trailer and crashed through the roof of his car.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 2 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 64. Investigators say two tires came off a tractor-trailer, hit the median and went airborne. The tires crashed through the roof of a passing car, striking and killing 73-year-old Ray Hartmann.

Hartmann was a St. Louis journalist known for founding The Riverfront Times, St. Louis Magazine and for his nearly 40 years on Nine PBS’ debate program “Donnybrook.”
