Pinellas County Schools has released their newest Planning for Progress plans for the next couple of years. While these changes aim to improve programs, expand technical programs, and enhance facility use, these plans also affect Lakewood High School. Even though no physical changes are happening to Lakewood, a reading of the district’s recommendations reveals that Lakewood is indirectly affected by changes in feeder patterns, program placement, and student pathways.
The most dramatic change is the transformation of Boca Ciega High School into a technical high school beginning in the 2028–29 school year. The district says that Boca Ciega currently enrolls 967 students but has a permanent capacity of 2,492 seats, resulting in a utilization rate of only 39 percent. To address this underutilization, the district plans to remodel the campus, expand technical pathways, and enhance the existing Center for Wellness and Medical Professions.
This expansion of technical programming at Boca Ciega creates an attraction for students across South Pinellas County. Technical high schools offer certifications and specialized career pathways.
