Sarasota high-rise scaffolding snaps, leaving workers dangling

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Two construction workers were left hanging from the side of a downtown Sarasota high-rise on Wednesday.

Just before 11:30 a.m., crews were called to a building under construction at 33 South Palm Avenue after scaffolding failed, leaving two workers dangling 12 stories high.

Sarasota firefighters conducted a high-angle rescue and carried the workers to safety, where they were evaluated by paramedics.

Mike Romano, who was working at the site, said the workers were trapped. Romano and his wo-workers did what they could to save them.

“We proceeded to break the windows to try and get them back in,” he said.

“Crews are still working to secure the scaffolding. “They did have safety harnesses in addition to the scaffolding they were on, so when it did collapse, obviously it kept them from free falling, so they were dangling but they were secured to the building,” said Travis Dagenais with Sarasota Fire Rescue.
