A large-scale search and rescue operation in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains ended with a successful outcome after an overdue camper was found alive in the rugged Mt. Jefferson Wilderness, bringing relief to family members and highlighting both the challenges and importance of wilderness preparedness across the state.
The operation began after 68-year-old John Nelson failed to return from a camping trip near Russell Lake in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. A family friend reported him overdue on July 7 after he did not return as expected, prompting the Marion County Sheriff’s Office to launch a coordinated search effort in one of Oregon’s most remote and physically demanding backcountry landscapes.
Over the following days, dozens of trained search and rescue volunteers, law enforcement personnel, federal land managers, aviation crews, and emergency responders worked together to locate Nelson.
