Readers respond: Replace gas tax with weight-mile fee

I agree that Measure 120 is destined to fail, (“Editorial endorsement May 2026: Vote ‘no’ on Measure 120 and set the stage for a new transportation funding deal,” May 3).

However, failure to pass this measure does not solve the problem of how to pay for road maintenance and repairs, as well as other transportation projects. It is imperative that an adequate and reliable revenue source be found.

An effective revenue package to meet present and future transportation needs cannot rely on the obsolete funding model that is the gasoline tax. The ever-increasing prevalence of fuel-efficient hybrid and electric vehicles means there is no longer any direct relationship between gasoline consumption and miles driven. These vehicles do, however, continue to cause wear and tear on roads. This is even more true for electric vehicles, which are heavier than their gasoline engine counterparts…
