SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Thursday, Utah! The risk of flash flooding continues this afternoon as monsoon moisture continues to impact the state.
Today’s weather: Ridge of high pressure
The ridge of high pressure will remain off to the east in the four corners continuing the southerly flow that will draw in monsoonal moisture. The flash flood threat will be elevated compared to previous days with the WPC issuing a slight or 15% risk of flash flooding within a 25-mile radius for southern Utah and a 5% or marginal risk for much of northern Utah. ‘

In conjunction with this threat, a Flood Watch has been issued for southwest Utah this afternoon through this evening. The main threat will be excessive rainfall may result in flooding of slot canyons, dry washes, burn scars, and other low-lying or flood prone areas.
Tomorrow’s weather: Possible flash flooding
The flood threat is forecasted to continue into Friday and likely this weekend, with the Flood Watch likely to be extended. If you do plan on visiting any of our National Parks in southern Utah, flash flooding will be probable, so make sure to have ways to receive alerts, be prepared, or make alternate plans. It only takes a few inches of water to be swept away and if you do run into flooded roadways remember, turn around and don’t drown.
Friday will feature another rinse and repeat situation with a slight or 15% risk of flash flooding for southwest Utah and a marginal or 5% risk for the rest of Utah. We’ll see better chances for showers and thunderstorms across the Wasatch Front with more widespread coverage.
Looking ahead: Monsoonal moisture
As we head into this weekend, this monsoonal moisture will continue to flow into Utah with widespread daily chances for showers and thunderstorms and the risk of flash flooding. Daytime highs through the weekend will remain fairly stable with temperatures in the mid and upper 90’s for southern Utah and low and mid 90’s into northern Utah.
Overnight lows will remain above average with lows only cooling into the low and mid 70’s with upper 70’s and low 80’s across southern Utah. This is all thanks to the increased cloud coverage we’ll see with a warm moist airmass hanging around leading to higher relative humidities…
