‘I dance for my kids’: Stroke survivor dances for resilience, wins first place at West Valley City powwow

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4) — West Valley City hosted the 13th annual Celebrating the People Powwow on Saturday, featuring dance competitions in several patterns. Coming in first place was stroke survivor Devan Kicknosway, who hopes the win will teach his children the strength of the family name.

“What a powwow means to me, it means we still exist,” said Kicknosway, a Mohawk from the upper New York region.

While he is known for his Northern Traditional dance across the United States and Canada, everything changed in 2023 when he suffered a stroke while exercising.
