SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It’s National Dog Day. This yearly event was established 22-years-ago in 2004. According to the American Red Cross, National Dog Day was established not only to celebrate dogs, but also to raise awareness and encourage people to consider adoption.
The need for adoption
According to Best Friends Animal Society, about 250,000 dogs are waiting to find their forever homes across the country every day.
Using data gathered from over 100,000 animal shelters nationwide, Best Friends concludes that if merely 1 in 1,000 people chose to adopt a dog as opposed to buying a dog from a breeder or dog store, shelters could end the practice of killing healthy dogs.
To reduce the number of dogs euthanized, Best Friends encourages Utahns to consider adopting a dog from a local shelter.
