The University of Utah is extending its medical school to St. George to help bolster the number of medical practitioners in rural communities.
The Southern Utah Regional Medical Campus now occupies the former University of Utah Graduate Center, located at 1071 E. 100 S. in St. George, just a short distance away from the campus of Utah Tech University, also a partner in this endeavor.
The first semester for the newly established medical campus of the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine will begin in the fall. Ten admitted students will begin their lives on campus after their first year of medical school in Northern Utah. They will then attend years two through four in St. George.
The regional campus will admit up to 30 students, with 10 students in each of three grade levels, officials say. Since this is the first year for the Southern Utah campus, it will begin with 10 students in their second year of medical school, the next year will add 10 more, and by fall 2028, the campus will hit its maximum capacity of 30 students and see its first set of graduates by spring 2029…
