Review: Pioneer Theatre’s excellent ‘Come From Away’ showcases kindness in time of tragedy

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 4, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Pioneer Theatre Company’s production of “Come From Away” — based on the 2001 redirection of 38 airplanes carrying about 7,000 passengers to a small Newfoundland town in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks — plays through this week at Pioneer Theatre Company.

In the Irene Sankoff-David Hein musical, as in real life, the passengers arrive uninformed about why they have been diverted away from U.S. airspace. They are also a little scared of the members of the remote community tasked with taking them in.

The community members, on the other hand, are well-aware of the nearly 3,000 victims who have died tragic deaths because of terror attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shakesville, Pennsylvania…
