One of the most beloved and long-standing radio DJs in South Texas is putting out an urgent call for help — one that will save his life.
JoJo Cerda, known in the Rio Grande Valley as JoJo from the KTEX Morning Show, is in kidney failure because the organ he received through a transplant in 2015 is now shutting down. Cerda’s doctors first noted signs of the transplanted kidney’s decline in late 2023, but now the organ’s failure has accelerated, prompting Cerda to search for a compatible living donor.
“Bottom line – I need a new kidney… I can survive without a kidney, but it is very difficult,” Cerda said in a Facebook post on Monday, April 27.
Doctors at Methodist Healthcare System Texas Transplant Institute in San Antonio have placed Cerda back on the transplant list, but the popular DJ said that waiting for an organ from a cadaver can take anywhere from 5 to 7 years.
