A Look Back at Playland Park

A playground dubbed the “Coney Island of Texas” that entertained San Antonio for over three decades opened north of downtown 83 years ago.

Playland Park held its Alamo Street grand opening on May 15, 1943. The new spot was a larger venue than its original location at Brackenridge Park, where it opened in 1941.

The park, created to entertain military personnel and their families who had relocated to the Alamo City because of World War II, made carnival games and amusement park rides affordable for many San Antonio families…
