California releases nearly $50 million to tackle Tijuana River sewage crisis

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — California is releasing $46 million in voter-approved Prop 4 funding to combat the Tijuana River sewage crisis, potentially providing a funding boost for several San Diego projects.

“We never thought that the trash was accumulating in such big numbers because this type of infrastructure was never installed,” said Oscar Romo, field coordinator for the trash boom project.

Every day, the trash boom along the U.S.-Mexico border serves as a critical line of defense, which Romo sees firsthand. “Industrial waste, wastewater of course, tarps, mattresses, furniture, dead dogs,” he described.
