The bar first opened in the 1930s in a former blacksmith shop at 450 Magnolia Avenue in downtown Larkspur. According to local lore, a former World War II GI named Chester Wolmack purchased the bar using silver pesos salvaged from Manila Bay. Legend also has it that the bar’s piano was once played by Janis Joplin.
The bar was temporarily closed after a car rammed into the building last year. Since then, the bar has changed ownership, having been acquired by Max Perry and Conor Flaherty, who also own Sam’s Anchor Cafe in Tiburon.
The bar is slated to reopen on Saturday with the new ownership “committed to restoring the beloved neighborhood staple to its fable glory,” according to a press release.
“Marin has plenty of bars, but we believe every community needs a Silver Peso — a place where people can have a shot and a beer and maybe play some pool and shuffleboard,” said Perry. “It felt like a calling. We want to ensure the Peso lives on as a legendary institution.”
The Silver Peso, according to the new owners, will remain true to its roots. It won’t become a wine bar but will instead continue to serve “dependable beer and classic cocktails.” The reopened bar will also place renewed emphasis on sports and gaming with updated TVs and a “refreshed” interior…
