Surfer dies after Ocean Beach rescue: SFFD

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A distressed surfer who was rescued Thursday afternoon at Ocean Beach near Lincoln Avenue, after they were spotted by lifeguards waving their hands above their head just outside the surf line, later succumbed to their injuries, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

Around 1:20 p.m., SFFD said an off-duty National Park Service lifeguard who was surfing nearby, along with three on-duty NPS Ocean Rescue lifeguards, jumped into action and immediately swam toward the location.

“Upon reaching the distressed surfer, the lifeguards found an adult surfer who was face down, unconscious, and not breathing,” SFFD said in a statement to KRON4. “They initiated a rescue and began life-saving measures while bringing the victim back to the shoreline. Paramedics from the San Francisco Fire Department arrived shortly afterward and continued with advanced life support care.”

The surfer was taken to a local hospital where they are listed in critical condition…
