San Leandro police shoot, kill man during welfare check

San Leandro police officers fatally shot a distressed man they were called to help Thursday night after he allegedly pointed a gun at them, the department said in a Friday statement.

Just after 8 p.m. Thursday, San Leandro Police Department officers responded to a call for a welfare check on a man who had reportedly made suicidal statements to his friend. The caller said that the man was suffering from depression, police said.

After they were unable to find the man at his residence on the 14500 block of Santiago Road, the officers located him in a parked car near the boat launch at the San Leandro Marina. Police said the man stayed in the car while they spoke with him for several minutes…
