Ever since the Safeway on the border of North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf closed in 2023, residents in the area have been clamoring for a new grocery store. SFGATE reported in 2024 that Emeryville-headquartered discount grocery store chain Grocery Outlet planned to take over the former Safeway at 350 Bay St. — and now, we finally have an updated opening timeline.
The Grocery Outlet at NorthPoint Centre is set to open in late summer of this year, a Grocery Outlet representative confirmed to SFGATE. Earlier this week, an eagle-eyed Redditor posted a photo of a new Grocery Outlet sign at the location. In late March, Hoodline spotted construction barriers, plywood walls and banners reading “Future home of Grocery Outlet” at the site, indicating the store is under construction.
Anchor Pacific Capital purchased NorthPoint Centre and the neighboring residential complex in 2023 for almost $26 million. Initially, Grocery Outlet projected it would open at the shopping center in the first quarter of 2026 — a window that has since passed.
