A tractor-trailer fire on southbound Interstate 680 near Sunol brought traffic to a crawl during Monday morning’s commute, with the cleanup effort stretching well into the afternoon before all lanes reopened.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fire was first reported around 4:34 a.m. near Vargas Road, south of Sunol. Callers told dispatchers that no one was inside the vehicle at the time, though the flames had spread to nearby hillside vegetation.
CHP units arrived on scene roughly twenty minutes later and found the fire had already burned off the truck’s rear tires and blocked the slow lane of the freeway…
