Police in Union City lifted the lockdown of the area near Dowe Avenue and Alvarado Niles Road early Thursday morning after the end of a standoff that started when an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy was shot while serving an eviction notice.
Union City police sent out a message shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday, saying the police activity in the area was “resolved” and that there was no longer a danger to the public. However the message did not specify that the suspect was in custody.
Video taken at the scene showed authorities using drones and what appeared to be flash-bang devices during the standoff shortly after midnight. The standoff lasted for hours.
There is still a large police perimeter outside the building in the industrial park where the suspect who shot the deputy appeared to be holed up.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Alameda County deputies were in the area of 33000 block of Dowe Avenue serving an eviction notice when someone opened fire not long after they arrived. Alameda Sheriff PIO Captain Tya Modeste said they do not yet know if deputies fired back, but one deputy was injured in the shooting.
